And the Hyperion thing happened earlier than the blowing up thing, because I need a place to house all these people, so I can pull them out to play with them at my will. _________________________________________ Last Time: Giles continued, “We may also want to investigate her claim as to whether or not your actions with Acathla resulted in the permanence of your soul.” “What?” Angel asked in confusion. Giles offered, “’They said his punishment for the stone monster was never being free of the nasty spark ever again.’ The ‘stone monster’ could be Acathla and the ‘nasty spark’ would be your soul.” Angel leaned against the countertop heavily, overwhelmed at the possibility that his soul could be permanent. “We will also need to discuss, privately of course, what exactly your intentions toward Xander are. And how much ‘fun’ you intend on having with him,” Giles said seriously. Angel gulped. ******* Angel stared at the Watcher in awe and fear; if he could sweat, he would be sweating bullets right now. “Uh… I’m not sure what you mean,” the dark vampire hedged as he looked around the room for a distraction or escape route. Giles merely raised a disdainful eyebrow. “I was neither born yesterday, nor am I stupid. You obviously have some interest in the boy. It is quite apparent to anyone without blinders on. Which is why Buffy and Willow haven’t noticed, but rest assured, everyone else has. Be thankful that it is myself standing here and not Mrs. Summers.” At the thought of being confronted by Joyce, Angel began to panic. His knees went weak and he nearly hyperventilated before he realized he didn’t have to breathe. Giles rolled his eyes. After Angel had calmed down a bit, he faced the fact that there was no way to avoid this question. “Well… I… uh… You see…” Just when Giles was about to test his theory about strangling vampires, an annoying electronic version of some hideous disco song was heard. Angel nearly passed out in relief, then embarrassment. “Cordelia programmed my phone,” he offered as he pulled his cell phone from his pocket. “Hello?” Angel said into the phone. He quickly pulled it away from his ear when he heard his Seer-slash-secretary screeching through it. “Cordelia, please, calm down. I can’t understand what you’re saying,” Angel pleaded. After a moment, she repeated what she had said at a lower decibel and a slower pace. “Angel, why the hell am I getting a vision, featuring Doyle, about you, Xander, a happy. and no soul-go-bye-bye?” Angel was stunned. Giles, who had heard Cordelia despite her lowered voice because lowered was still loud, took the phone. “Cordelia, Angel just received a… package from Drusilla and a note regarding who kidnapped Xander and Spike. The missive mentioned that because of Angelus’ poor judgment regarding Acathla, he can no longer be released by Angel losing his soul. It also mentioned that Angel’s new Seer, which would presumably be you, would receive a vision regarding the situation. Is there any possibility that you could be more specific in what your vision told you?” After a few moments of silence on the other end of the phone, Cordelia answered, “Doyle, the guy that passed me the visions, was there. He told me he missed us, but he had another job, another purpose now. He said that the Powers That Be didn’t want a repeat of the Acathla thing, with the whole world endage stuff, so they bound his soul to him. More specifically to him and Xander. Apparently my ex is supposed to help me guide Angel along the right path towards redemption. “Doyle said Xander’s time helping the Slayers has proved that he is more than capable of guiding a champion and doing what is necessary to save the world, even while he has maintained his humanity and sense of right and wrong.” Giles didn’t know what to say; it seemed he had once again underestimated the boy. “Giles? You there? Give the phone to Angel, I have something I need to tell him, something private,” Cordelia said. Angel, having heard the entire conversation, took the phone from the Watcher’s hand. “Cordelia? It was really Doyle?” Cordelia sniffed back a few tears. “Yeah, it was him. His usual sarcastic self… I really miss him.” “Me too,” Angel said softly. “He tacked on a message at the end, Angel. He said to, and I quote, ‘get off your self-flagellation streak, your soul ain’t goin’ anywhere, but the boy will if you don’t do something about it. See him as your reward for getting this far. He’ll help you along the rest o’ the way,’ end quote. I’m assuming he meant Xander.” “But…” Angel began. “Not ‘buts,’ Angel. Xander needs you and you need him. And despite all evidence to the contrary, he’s pretty good at being a voice of reason. He’s called Buffy on her crap a few times, but was still there for her when she needed him. You need someone besides me to do that for you. And he deserves to have someone who loves and appreciates him to do that for. He might be a little wary, ‘cause honestly, her Buffyness has kicked him in the teeth a time or two… or ten. They don’t take care of him like we would. And we need him. You need him. And the PTBs are pretty much handing him to you on a silver platter,” Cordy said quietly, but sternly. “What if he doesn’t…” “He does. I promise, he does. He might resist a little, for appearance’s sake. But all you really have to do is ask him to stay, tell him you need and want him to stay, and he’ll stay. Tell him about the curse not being so much clause-y, and the rest will be history,” Cordelia said “Cordy?” Angel asked. “I won’t break his confidence Angel. Just work on getting him to stay and then worry about the other stuff. I gotta get back to my Xander-watching. We’ll talk more later,” Cordelia said before she hung up. Angel stared off into space, trying to process all that he’d been told. “Ahem.” The dark vampire looked over at Giles and raised an eyebrow in question. “I didn’t hear all of that, but she’s right. We don’t take care of him or appreciate him like we should. I would love to say that it would never happen again, but our past experience suggests that it might. He has a good head on his shoulders and is far brighter than we give him credit for, but we forget that. As much as I would hate to lose him, Xander would be a great asset to you. I’m not talking romantically. Even if you never… made your move on him, he would still be a great help in making sure you stay to your path,” Giles admitted. “I do have… feelings for him. And I do respect him. Even when he was most vocal in his disapproval of me and my relationship with Buffy, I respected him. He is the only one of you who never lost sight of who and what I am, a vampire. And the whole vampire and Slayer thing is wrong, intrinsically wrong. Not to mention Buffy and I were wrong for each other, personality-wise. Maybe I should have let him guide me from the beginning. “I want him here. And I want him, period. I’ll do my best not to hurt him. I can’t make promises any more than you can, but if he does get hurt, it won’t be because I neglected and ignored him or didn’t love him,” Angel said earnestly. Giles stared at Angel, trying to gauge his veracity. “If anything happens to him, you’ll have to answer to all of us. I’ll not hesitate to sic Joyce, Dawn and Willow on you.” Angel shivered, even as he smiled. “I’ll hold you to that.” The two men nodded in agreement and sat down to plan how to tell the others, not to mention Xander, that he had been drafted by the Powers That Be. It wasn’t going to be pretty. Part 22 Back to WITS Home Back to Fiction Index Reviews? Email Me |
